Position Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Nursing and HHR Workforce Initiatives, the Extern Mentor & Administrator supports the planning, scheduling, onboarding and integration of Externs and Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) completing their Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) within the model of care at Michael Garron Hospital.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supports the training and integration of Externs and IENs at the organizational and unit level
  • Contributes to Extern and IEN onboarding as well as, practice development within the boundaries of the Extern and IEN role
  • Assists Externs and IENs to become familiar with the work in their assigned area of practice
  • Collaborates with unit teams to support Externs and IENs in providing required patient care
  • Serves as a liaison between the unit leadership, program leadership, Professional Practice and Operations
  • Coordinates ongoing learner education opportunities
  • Supports the evaluation of programs within the Nursing Practice and Education department
  • Facilitates the scheduling processes to ensure that all areas are adequately staffed in an operationally safe and fiscally responsible manner
  • Collaborate with clinical leadership teams and point of care staff across the organization and other support services to ensure adherence to scheduling policies and models of care
  • Conducts data analysis to support decision making, identifying opportunities and creating practical options for improvements

This is a temporary contract full-time position that ends on March 31, 2025 (with the possibility of extension).

Education

  • Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse  in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) required

Experience

  • Patient and Family-Centered approach to clinical practice
  • Demonstrates excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills
  • Interest in and experience with mentoring, preceptorship and adult learning
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and evidence-based practice and clinical practice excellence
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in acute care in medicine, surgery, complex continuing care, mental health, maternal newborn and child, and/or emergency areas, preferred
  • Good work and attendance record is required
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflicting priorities and confidential data.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of analytical skills and knowledge of analytical software (e.g. Microsoft Excel and other statistical software) required.
  • Experience with process design utilizing Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Forms, Power Apps) an asset
  • Knowledge of ANSOS or other electronic scheduling systems an asset.
  • Experience building and optimizing schedules and master rotations preferred.
