OVERVIEW

The Disability Claims Specialist (DCS) under the direction of the Manager of Occupational Health and Safety will be providing expert case management of disability claims/cases including WSIB, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, return to work, absence management, and work accommodation processes. DCS will be a resource in case management process by reviewing policies, procedures, and processes regarding disability management, making recommendations and facilitating their implementation. The DCS’s strategic skills will contribute to the collection, assessment and analysis of data/indicators by providing and supporting recommendations for continuous improvement and best practice processes. The DCS in conjunction with internal and external resources collaborate to ensure successful and timely outcomes. The DCS will provide disability case management to health care workers to ensure safe and early return to productive employment. This includes educating, planning, and facilitating successful return to work plans ill/injured employees. The DCS will ensure timely and effective interventions to maximize cost avoidance and cost recovery.
    
Responsibilities:

- Evaluate, monitor and manage short term disability (STD), and work alongside the Hospital’s Long term disability (LTD) provider in the management of LTD claims and return to work planning.
-Receive, review, follow up,  and communicate a determinateof whether medical documentation is satisfactoryto the Hospital for sick leave benefits under the Hospitals of Ontario Disability Income Plan (HOODIP).
- Report and Manage WSIB claims with goal of early and safe return to work programs and reduction of lost time. File required objections andreconsiderations of WSIB case files for appeals.
- Manage non-compensable and compensable illness and injuries with requested appropriate medical inquiries and interventions.
- Lead and monitor the development of best practices in disability management.
- Prepare and submit documentation for IME evaluations.
- Assist and provide consultation to Human Resources regarding the Hospital’s Attendance Management Program.
- Collaborate with workers, unions, managers and relevant health practitioners on a regular basis.
- Attend and assist  Human Resources and Labour relations with grievances and arbitrations.

EDUCATION

- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline such as Nursing, Kinesiology or Physiotherapy required.
- Occupational Health Nursing experience preferred.
- Disability Management Certification preferred (CDMP, CRTWC).
- Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety preferred.


QUALIFICATIONS

- Minimum of 3-5 years of recent related experience in Occupational Health & Safety (in a unionized healthcare environment preferred).
- Demonstrated knowledge of Disability Case Management is required.
- Experience with WSIB claims management.
- Excellent conflict resolution and mediation skills.
- Experience with data management and statistics.
- Exceptional interpersonal, leadership, problem solving, and teaching skills.
- Self-motivated with superior organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint required
- Experience with Parklane software preferred.
- Applies findings to developand implement practice changes as required.
- Update Disability Management Reports & Programs.
- Good work and attendance record is required.
