OVERVIEW

As a member of the laboratory office, contributes to the efficient operation of the lab office with effective information management as outlined in the Laboratory Policies and Procedures. The unit clerk is responsible for the maintaining an orderly flowof reports and stored pathology material (slides/blocks).  In addition to facilitating laboratory reporting, filing/retrieval of reports, requisitions, slides and blocks, the unit clerk will perform general office duties, adhere to retention guidelines and assist with sending/receiving pathology material to/from reference labs.

EDUCATION

-  Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent educational preparation.
-  Course in medical typing/terminology an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

-  Minimum 1 year of recent experience in a hospital office setting (laboratory office experience preferred)
-  Recent experience in LIS and HIS systems
-  Basic computer skills – e.g. Word, Excel
-  Effective interpersonal and communication skills (fluent in written and spoken English)
-  Experience in general office procedures 
-  Good independent judgment skills
-  Effective time management and organization skills 
-  Must perform work accurately
-  Mature, professional  individual who is able to show discretion when interacting with staff and patients 
-  Must be able to work well with lab professionals and all other staff in the hospital
-  Good work and attendance record required
