Overview 

The RN is responsible to apply nursing theory, practical experience, awareness of community services and physiological and psychological principles of health and disease in the care of the Oncology patient. Care will be delivered as established by the standards of nursing practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the standards of nursing care of Michael Garron Hospital, a division of the Toronto East Health Network. Nurses will be responsibile for following OH-Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) guidelines for cancer care as well as the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) guidelines. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patients needs relative to nursing care of a patient with a cancer/hematological diagnosis. Practices as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

 

Education

-  Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
-  Successful completion of CNA Certification in Oncology preferred.
-  Completion of de Souza Institute’s Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapy certificate program, or the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration certificate required.
-  Completion of health/physical assessment certificate required.
-  BLS certification required.

 

Qualifications

- 2-3 years recent experience in Oncology and Cancer Therapy (Chemotherapy/Biotherapy). 
- Demonstrated clinical competence in the delivery of IV and Oral Chemotherapy/Biotherapy, blood/blood products.
- 2-3 years of recent continuous experience  and demonstrated competence in IV therapy including challenging IV insertions. 
- Demonstrated competence and recent experience in access and management of central venous access devices, (PICC, Hickman, Port-a-cath).
- Education in areas of cancer and hematological disorders required.    
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of current Chemotherapy/Biotherapy protocols and alternatives per disease site.
- Evidence of excellent physical  assessment including history, psycho-social and  patient/family teaching skills. 
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical documentation according to Cancer Care Ontario guidelines.
- Demonstrates effective problem solving/critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of community services related to Oncology care.
- Understanding of clinical trials and research methodology. 
- Demonstrated  motivation to pursue educational goals Demonstrated leadership/in-charge skills in the facilitation of interdisciplinary practice and evidence of strong organizational and decision making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to implement plan of care including independent and interdependent nursing functions.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in unit  quality initiatives and measurements including the collection of workload statistics and audit information.
- Demonstrated understanding of accountability based practice.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
- Excellent  time management and attendance record required.
